The EPA has this to say: “Most of us spend much of our time indoors. The air that we breathe in our homes, in schools, and in offices can put us at risk for health problems. Some pollutants can be chemicals, gases, and living organisms like mold and pests. Several sources of air pollution are in homes, schools, and offices. Some pollutants cause health problems such as sore eyes, burning in the nose and throat, headaches, or fatigue. Other pollutants cause or worsen allergies, respiratory illnesses (such as asthma), heart disease, cancer, and other serious long-term conditions. Sometimes individual pollutants at high concentrations, such as carbon monoxide, cause death.”

·         E. Coli (Escherichia coli) – That nasty stuff that we hear about contaminating chicken, beef, and even vegetables. This stuff comes from, well….poop. 

·         Listeria monocytogenes – causes Listeriosis, the leading cause of death among foodborne bacterial pathogens with fatality rates exceeding even Salmonella and Clostridium botulinum (botulism).

·         Streptococcus spp. – causes strep throat.  Certain Streptococcus species are responsible for many cases of meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, endocarditis (an inflammation of the inner layer of the heart), erysipelas (an acute streptococcus bacterial infection of the dermis, resulting in inflammation and characteristically extending into underlying fat tissue), and necrotizing fasciitis (commonly known as flesh-eating disease or flesh-eating bacteria.

·         Pseudomonas aeruginosa – a common bacterium which can cause disease in animals and humans. If it attacks critical body organs such as the lungs, the urinary tract, and kidneys, the results can be fatal.

·         Bacillus spp. – Two Bacillus species are considered medically significant: B. anthracis, which causes anthrax, and B. cereus, which causes a foodborne illness similar to that of Staphylococcus.

·         Staphylococcus aureus – the most common cause of staph infections.

·         Candida albicans – is a diploid fungus (a form of yeast), and a causal agent of opportunistic oral and genital infections in humans.

·         S. chartarum – Stachybotrys chartarum, otherwise known as black mold.

·         MRSA – Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium responsible for difficult-to-treat infections in humans.  It may also be referred to as multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA).  MRSA is by definition a strain of Staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to a large group of antibiotics called the beta-lactams, which include the penicillins and the cephalosporins.

·         Avian Flu (Subtype H5N8) – commonly called bird flu, refers to "influenza caused by viruses adapted to birds." Of the greatest concern is highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

·         Swine Flu (H1N1) – Swine influenza (also called swine flu, hog flu, and pig flu) is an infection by any one of several types of swine influenza virus.  Swine influenza virus (SIV) is any strain of the influenza family of viruses that is endemic in pigs. As of 2009, the known SIV strains include influenza C and the subtypes of influenza A known as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. Dr. James Marsden, Distinguished Professor at Kansas State University, is currently testing the air purifiers to determine their efficacy at killing the Swine Flu virus. The documentation is being expedited so we should have results soon!
